Affect of a slow page loading speed

A website that is slow to load is one of the main reasons why your business is not getting success on-line.

Visitor attention is at an all-time low and Google uses load speed as a major SEO ranking factor.

So, unless your website loads in under 3 seconds then you will not appear at the top of the search engine rankings and, if you do get a visitor, they will likely to depart quickly if your website takes too long to load

Activities to Speed Up Your Website Load Time

Decrease the Actual Size of Your Website

A likely cause of a slow loading website is heavy images. Learn about the difference between JPG, PNG and GIF here to ensure that you are using the correct resolution .

If you are using WordPress then the Smudge plugin is excellent at optimizing the image sizes.

Design Your Website for Mobile

When you are designing your website keep mobile devices in mind and keep the footprint as small as possible.

You could think of creating an Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) website which creates separate pages for mobile devices.

Make The Correct Technical Settings

If you are using WordPress as your platform it is best to use a plug in like WP Rocket to make these settings.

WP Rocket has functions like Preloading, GZIP Compression, Browser Caching, Database Optimization, Google Fonts Optimization, Remove Query Strings from Static Resources, LazyLoad, Minification/Concatenation, Defer JS Loading, DNS Prefetching, and Mobile Detection.

Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A CDN will copy your site onto servers worldwide and reduce the distance needed to be travelled by the data by connecting visitors to a server closer to them.

Static content will be cached and delivered by the Content Delivery Networks servers.

Cloudflare is a great CDN option as it offers a free option with lots of functionality.

Browser caching is a good way to improve the loading speed of your website for repeat visitors as it downloads files from the server onto the user’s computer or mobile device. For their next visit to your website these files will load locally from the user’s device instead of needing to request and load them from the external server.

Only Use Essential Plugins

Plugins can cause a high CPU or memory drain on your server and this can slow down your website.

Always think if you really need to add a new plugin. If you do really need it, then try to choose a plugin that is lightweight.

This is a list of slow WordPress plugins to be careful with.

Server Settings

Please ensure that you use the following settings and scheduling:

  • Implement the latest version of PHP that is compatible with your website. At the time of writing it the latest version of PHP is 7.3
  • Switch on “Keep-Alive” on your server
  • Enable HTTP/2
  • Include HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) in your server set up
  • Set your backups to complete at night

Website Hosting

There are two things to consider when deciding on website hosting – the provider and the hosting plan

Hosting Provider

There are many options available (some very cheap) but, like all things in life, you get what you pay for. The level of support is very important as well.  We recommend:

  • Inmotion Hosting. This company provide the best support in the world – the only downside in is that they do not have any servers in Europe but using a CDN can help alleviate this issue.
  • Site Ground. Site Ground has servers in Europe and the Americas and has an excellent support team in Bulgaria where many of the best IT professionals can be found.

Hosting Plans

There are normally three types of plans offered by the hosting provider – Shared, VPS and Dedicated. Each one of the options is likely to have sub plans

  • With Shared Hosting your website will be on a server with hundreds of other websites which could be taking the resources that you need from you
  • VPS gives the option to own part of a server for your own use so you are in more control
  • Dedicated Hosting gives you your own server to do what ever you wish with it

Be careful with VPS and Dedicated on the Managed Services options. Some of these plans expect you to have the technical knowledge to make changes and fix problems. If you cannot fix the problem yourself then you will have to pay on a case by case basis..

We have never had any issues on support with Inmotion Hosting or Site Ground but other hosts try to nickel and dime you.
